Institute of Physics of the Earth named after O.Yu. Schmidt

The Joint Institute of Physics of the Earth was founded in 1928 and now is one of the oldest scientific institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is the largest center of geophysics, carrying out a wide range of fundamental and applied research.

The institute has large scientific schools in planetary and theoretical geophysics and provides the study of the internal structure of the earth through geophysical methods, seismology and the assessment of natural risks, geomagnetism, and physics of the ionosphere and magnetosphere. The specialists of the institute study the Earth’s fields, paleomagnetism issues, and magnetic properties of rocks, develop geophysical monitoring methods for predicting natural and man-made disasters, and explore the problems of the origin and early history of the Earth.
